It is my stop on the New Year, New Sew Blog Tour hosted by Sewing By Ti.  If you have not checked out her fabric shop Simply By Ti Fabrics, go now! She is also currently having a sale, you can see the details on my Sewing Deals Calendar.  This year one of my goals is to try more designers.  If you follow my blog; I have some favorites, however I would also like to branch out and try more designers and more new patterns.  For today’s blog post, I am using a favorite designer and a new designer.  You know, make new friends, but keep the old.  One is silver and the other is gold. 🙂  Although, this is my first time making both patterns.

First off, how cute is this outfit? I used the Playful Tunic from Ellie and Mac (a favorite) and the Girls Rosie Ruffled Leggings from Mama Can Do it (new designer).  Look at me!  First month in and already trying out a new designer! I joined the Rosie Ruffled Leggings Sew a Long and when I saw the pattern, I knew exactly which fabric I was going to use.  Btw, Ellie and Mac’s patterns all 20% off till the end of the month.  No coupon code necessary, the discount will show in your cart.

Secondly, did anyone notice, Baby Girl is NOT wearing pink.  Can you believe it?  She did not hesitate putting this outfit on either.  I used the purple cotton lycra and purple stretch lace, both from Simply By Ti.  They are just so gorgeous together.  You may be thinking you have seen a similar top and you would be correct.  I did use the same purple cotton lycra and stretch lace for the Ellie and Mac Unisex Raglan I made.  This time, since the ruffled leggings were sheer, I needed something longer.  Just look at these leggings though!

The ruffled leggings were so easy to make and they are so ruffly!  If you look closely you can see, I even changed out my serger thread to purple to make them. I never do this.  I own two sergers, one with light grey and one with black.  Rarely, do I change them, however since the lace was so sheer, I decided to use purple serger thread.  I did make them a size larger than Baby Girl measured, so they are a bit big on her.  It is still super cold here, so these will be more of a spring outfit.  Baby Girl is currently in the middle of a growth spurt and wanted to make sure they would still fit in the spring.  I also made the playful tunic in a larger size, however for a different reason.

I made the tunic a size larger, because I really want to make the playful tunic in French Terry.  Glitter French Terry to be exact, yes it is thing, you can find it here! I wanted to see if I sized up, if it would still work with a fabric with a little less stretch.  So, I guess you could say this was my muslin.  Lol!  Yes,  I just did a muslin with a lace overlay.  I have tested many of Ellie and Mac’s patterns and I am confident in her sizing, therefore, I knew there would not be an issue with the tunic.  What do you think?  Will it work in French Terry?   I do love lace overlays though.

Lace overlays are so easy to do as well.  First, I cut out a front piece in cotton lycra and then, cut another front piece in lace overlay.  Then, I clip them together, all the way around.  I, then, tack the lace down with a long straight stretch stitch.  You want to run this stitch close to the edge or at least keep it less than your seam allowance.  Then you just sew the rest of the outfit according to the pattern.  Super Easy!  The stretch lace is super soft too.  Baby Girl had no issues wearing it, either on her tunic or her leggings.

Baby Girl was actually sad when I told her we had to take off the lace ruffled leggings.  We needed to go outside and it was a bit too chilly for these leggings, unfortunately.  Fortunately though, she was able to run, jump, play, etc. in this outfit without any issues.  Which is important to both her and me.  I want her to have to cute clothes, however this little girl is a climber.  You can see she is standing on the edge of her cute little pink kids sofa.

She was even trying to climb her purple Little Tikes doll house.  I told her it may not be a good idea, as we did not want it to break.  I bought this adorable little doll house before she was even born!  They do not make them anymore, so I saw it for a good deal, I snagged it.  You can usually find on ebay though, check here.

Overall, Baby Girl and I loved both the Playful Tunic sewing pattern by Ellie and Mac and the Rosie’s Ruffled leggings by Mama Can do it.  I believe you will see both in more colors soon on my blog.  Let me know in the comments below if you will be making some lace leggings too!

    • Thanks!! I try to let her play and capture her while she is playing. The one with her standing on the couch, she was laughing because she was moving it back and forth. Silly Girl!
