The One Thimble Magazine Issue 18 has released and it includes some amazing sewing patterns like the Basilica Skirt sewing pattern by Orange Daisy Patterns.  You can buy the entire One Thimble Issue 18 magazine here full of sewing patterns and sewing related articles!  Or you can buy the Basilica Skirt by itself here. As soon as I saw this sweet flowy skirt, I just knew I wanted to make one for Baby Girl.  Now, Baby Girl, is really hit or miss on dresses and skirts.  She used to tell me she did not like dresses, however if I called them tops instead of dresses, she would wear them.  Recently though, she tells she likes dresses. (Mostly after the Be Dreamy dress I made her.)  So, I thought I would attempt to a skirt….

First off, I knew the fabric needed to be pink for my little pink obsessed girl. So, I used some dusty rose pink mesh. I chose to use mesh for a few reasons.  First, I would not have to hem it. Second, it is so soft! Third, I love the way it flows.  When Baby Girl first saw the skirt, she said, “No, me no like skirts!”  However…  with a little bribery, she appeased me and tried it on.  You can see her checking the skirt out above.

I paired her skirt with the Juliette Leotard from Petite Stitchery (you can see my review here), as she loves her gymnastics leotards. I used a gorgeous pink unicorn double brushed polyester from So Sew English.  We have not started any dance classes, however this skirt made her look like a little ballerina.  With her little pointed toes, she already looks like a professional.

Often,  I sew (or write my blog posts) in the middle of the night, while the house is quiet.  Like right now, for example.  Who needs sleep anyway? Therefore, I did make a little mistake when cutting out the skirts.  The basilica skirt sewing pattern gives you a few options.  You can cut the fabric out in several pieces and sew them together.  I would assume this would be important in larger sizes.  Or, the sewing pattern also gives you the option of cutting it out in a circle (or technically squares) without seams.  The sewing patterns tell you take out the seam allowance.  However I only took out the seam allowance from one side instead of two.  Oops.

So, I had to adjust the waistband, just a little bit.  Then, I just added the right size elastic and all was well.  As you can see, my little mistake did not hurt the appearance of this super adorable skirt.  The only other thing I changed about the basilica skirt sewing pattern was, I did not fold up the hem of the underskirt. I just serged the hem with some pink thread and called it a day. The less hemming the better for this girl.  LOL!

After, I was able to capture a few cute pictures of Baby Girl in her new adorable Basilica Skirt, I let her know she could take it off.  That is when she proudly announced, “No!  Me like skirts now!”  Then, she proceeded to wear it for the rest of the evening.

Issue 18 of the One thimble Magazine is full of great sewing patterns like this Basilica Skirt and the Spirited Dress I will be sewing up soon.  There are also patterns for women, boys and home decor!  Go here to buy it today!
